Decontaminating PPE after use is essential to prevent cross-contamination. PPE can carry hazardous substances from the scene on its surfaces, and if it isn’t cleaned or properly disposed of, those contaminants can transfer to clean areas, equipment, and other responders. This protects health and safety by stopping secondary exposures and keeping the incident environment from becoming re-contaminated as responders continue their work. While appearance or speed of decon aren’t the priorities, choosing to skip decontamination or to rush it would increase risk, and avoiding PPE altogether would leave people unprotected.
